FCMB Named Nigeria’s Best SME-Focused Bank for 2025 – Here’s Why It Matters

First City Monument Bank (FCMB) just bagged the “Best SME-Focused Bank in Nigeria 2025” award from the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) — and it’s not just a shiny plaque.
The award is backed by hard CBN data:
FCMB holds a massive 24% share of Nigeria’s total SME lending (₦1.8 trillion disbursed in 2024). That’s more than any other bank.
The award was handed over at the CIBN’s 60th Annual Bankers Dinner in Lagos on November 28, 2025, where FCMB’s Executive Director of Wholesale Banking, Obaro Odeghe, collected it on behalf of Managing Director Yemisi Edun.

Why FCMB Actually Deserves It (The Numbers Don’t Lie)

    • ₦432 billion in SME loans disbursed (24% of Nigeria’s total)
    • Heavy focus on the real economy drivers:
      • Crop production (26.51% of GDP)
      • Trade (14.78%)
      • Telecoms (13.94%)
      • Real estate & manufacturing
    • Non-financial support: Free training, advisory, digital tools for SMEs
    • Bonus win: FCMB staff member Tooritsemoshe Ojei named “Next Generation Banker Class of 2025”

    Yemisi Edun’s reaction:

“This recognition is built on CBN data. It shows we’re doing what we say — giving Nigerian entrepreneurs real money, real tech, and real advice to grow. That’s how you build an economy.”

How FCMB Is Different From Other Banks

While many banks talk about SMEs, FCMB walks it:

    • Faster approvals (some loans in 48 hours)
    • Lower collateral requirements
    • Digital platforms that actually work for small traders
    • Zero “hidden charges” complaints (rare in Nigeria)

This isn’t FCMB’s first rodeo. They’ve also won:

    • Mastercard Foundation Excellence Award (financial inclusion)
    • Global SME Finance Forum – SME Financier of the Year (Africa)
    • Development Bank of Nigeria – Highest Impact on First-Time Borrowers

What This Means for Nigerian SMEs

If you run a small business and you’re tired of banks asking for your grandfather’s land title before giving you ₦500k…
FCMB is currently the easiest big bank to get real SME funding from in Nigeria right now.
Whether you’re in agriculture, trading, tech, or food processing — they’re actively looking for people like you.
