M-KOPA Kenya Hits $1.6 Billion in Credit Disbursed – Becomes One of Kenya’s Largest Lenders to Low-Income Households
By Ndefo Onyekachukwu | November 24, 2025
M-KOPA Kenya, the local arm of the pan-African pay-as-you-go giant, has now extended more than $1.6 billion (KES 207 billion) in credit to customers across the country, cementing its position as one of Kenya’s biggest lenders to low- and middle-income households. The milestone was revealed on Monday during the launch of M-KOPA’s first Kenya-focused impact report in Nairobi, which chronicles the company’s 15-year journey from selling solar kits in rural areas to financing smartphones and electric motorbikes for millions who have never stepped inside a bank.
Key Numbers from the 2025 Report
- 4.8 million unique customers served in Kenya since inception
- 4.5 million smartphones financed – 2.1 million were first-time phone owners
- 37% of customers accessed their first-ever formal credit through M-KOPA
- 68% received their first health insurance policy via the “More than a Phone” bundle
- KES 3.79 billion paid in taxes in 2024 (among Kenya’s top private-sector taxpayers)
- KES 20.3 billion spent on local procurement
- 1,320 direct employees + 14,000 sales agents (many first-time formal earners
- 2 million phones assembled at its Nairobi factory (largest in Africa)
- 5,000+ electric motorbikes financed for boda-boda riders
“Kenya has always been the beating heart of M-KOPA’s progress journey,” said Martin Kingori, M-KOPA Kenya General Manager. “What matters most is the lived progress of everyday earners – 9 out of 10 report an improved quality of life, and more than half are now earning more.”
From Solar Kits to Smartphones & EVs
Started in 2010 with off-grid solar, M-KOPA pivoted heavily into smartphones in the late 2010s. Today, the handset is its flagship product, bundled with cash loans, health insurance, and digital services under the “More than a Phone” platform. The company has also entered the electric mobility space, financing over 5,000 e-motorbikes in Nairobi using the same daily/weekly payment model. Riders save up to 40% on fuel costs while cutting emissions.
Addressing the Over-Indebtedness Debate
Kenya’s digital credit market has faced heavy criticism for aggressive collections and trapping low-income borrowers. M-KOPA says its model is different:
- No hidden fees or late penalties
- No compounding interest on overdue balances
- Device lock only (phone turns off until payment resumes) – no debt spiral
- Full deposit refund if customer returns the device
Local Manufacturing & Job Creation
M-KOPA’s Nairobi assembly line, launched in partnership with local manufacturers, has produced 2 million devices and trains hundreds of technicians yearly in electronics assembly and quality control – directly supporting Kenya’s push for local manufacturing under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
What’s Next for M-KOPA in Kenya
With $1.6B already disbursed and growing demand for EVs and bundled financial services, the company plans to:
- Expand e-mobility to Mombasa and Kisumu
- Launch affordable laptops on pay-as-you-go
- Deepen health and device insurance offerings
M-KOPA’s story is a powerful reminder that fintech, when done responsibly, can be a real engine for inclusion and upward mobility in Kenya.
