Opening New Air Routes in Africa Remains a Major Challenge — Rui Carreira

Opening new airline routes across Africa is still a major challenge due to low GDP per capita and limited travel demand in many African countries, according to Angola’s Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, Maritime and Port Sectors, Rui Carreira.

Speaking on Monday, during the 57th Annual General Assembly of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) in Luanda, Carreira stressed that the aviation sector continues to face structural and economic barriers that make regional connectivity difficult.

Africa Trades More With the World Than With Itself

Carreira highlighted that African countries still conduct more trade with Europe, America, and Asia than with their own neighbors. This imbalance, he said, weakens the potential for stronger aviation links within the continent.

“We need to change this picture,” he emphasized. “Aviation is a strategic industry, but it cannot develop economies by itself. It requires stronger integration, trade, and movement of people.”

Intra-African Tourism Is Key to Route Expansion

The Secretary of State also noted that Africa must boost intra-African tourism to create demand for new air routes. He said Angola is positioning itself as a growing tourism destination and could play a major role in strengthening regional travel.

“We are exploring Angola’s tourism potential, and I believe the country will significantly support the growth of intra-African air traffic,” Carreira said.

Economic Growth Will Strengthen Aviation in Africa

Rui Carreira remains optimistic that the increasing economic performance of African countries will positively impact the aviation industry. Higher incomes, stronger regional partnerships, and improved trade flows will all help airlines expand routes and services.

As African economies continue to develop, aviation stakeholders hope to see a new phase of connectivity, competitiveness, and sustainable growth across the continent’s skies.
