FG Opens S-VCG Application Portal: Up to ₦50 Million Equity-Free Grants for Nigerian Student Startups in 2025

    By Ndefo Onyekachukwu | November 24, 2025
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the application portal for the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG), a flagship initiative under the Renewed Hope Agenda offering up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding to student-led innovations in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM). Announced on August 2, 2025, and powered by a partnership with Google using Gemini AI for streamlined evaluations, the program aims to transform campus ideas into scalable businesses. The portal opened on November 17, 2025, targeting full-time undergraduate students in 300-level and above at accredited Nigerian tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
S-VCG Nigeria 2025: ₦50 Million Student Venture Capital Grant – How to Apply & Eligibility
S-VCG, also known as the STEMM Up Grant, is a key component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s education strategy, emphasizing innovation as the foundation for economic growth. The program provides not just funding but also mentorship, incubation, and national visibility through the National Innovation Repository. With Nigeria’s youth unemployment at 53% and a push for 3 million technical talents by 2027, S-VCG positions students as future entrepreneurs.

    What is the S-VCG Program?

S-VCG is an equity-free seed investment initiative to nurture student ventures with commercial potential. It supports high-impact STEMM solutions addressing real-world challenges like healthcare, agriculture, and digital inclusion. Funding is disbursed in tranches based on milestones, with AI-powered reviews ensuring transparency and fairness. The program was piloted with 200+ ventures, and early success stories include AI health tools and agrotech innovations.
    Key objectives:
    • Foster innovation in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
    • Create jobs and drive economic diversification.
    • Build a repository of student-led projects for national showcase.

The partnership with Google integrates Gemini AI for application processing, reducing review time from weeks to days.

    Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must meet these requirements:

    • Student Status: Full-time undergraduates in 300-level or above at accredited Nigerian institutions (universities, polytechnics, colleges of education).
    • Venture Type: Student-led ideas, projects, or businesses in STEMM fields with strong scalability and impact.
    • Team Composition: Individuals or teams; no prior registration required, but prototypes or MVPs are preferred.
    • Innovation Focus: Solutions solving Nigerian problems (e.g., fintech for inclusion, healthtech for rural access).

Exclusions: Non-students, non-STEMM ideas, or ventures already funded by government programs. Priority for underrepresented groups, women-led teams, and rural institutions.

    How to Apply: Step-by-Step Guide

The portal is live at svcg.education.gov.ng. Applications are ongoing for the 2025 cycle – no fixed deadline, but early submission is advised for the current round.

    1. Register: Visit the portal and create an account with your student ID and email. Verify via OTP.
    2. Complete Profile: Upload personal/team details, institution verification, and venture summary.
    3. Submit Pitch: Include a 2–5 minute video pitch (use Canva or phone camera) demonstrating problem, solution, market, and scalability. Attach business plan, prototypes, or financial projections.
    4. AI Review: Gemini AI screens for completeness and potential; shortlisted entries go to expert panels.
    5. Approval & Funding: Selected teams receive milestone-based disbursements (initial ₦10M, up to ₦40M for growth). Access incubation and mentorship.

Tips: Keep pitches concise (focus on impact). High-quality videos boost approval rates. Track status via the portal.

    Program Structure and Benefits

    • Funding Tranches: Seed (up to ₦10M), growth (up to ₦40M) upon milestones like prototype validation or market entry.
    • Mentorship & Incubation: Pairing with industry experts, accelerators, and tools for scaling.
    • Visibility: Approved projects join the National Innovation Repository for national/international exposure.
    • Partnerships: Google’s AI ensures fair, fast evaluations; additional support from 3MTT and National AI Strategy.

With youth unemployment at 53% and a goal of 3 million technical talents by 2027, S-VCG empowers students to innovate solutions like AI for agriculture or fintech for inclusion. It’s part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, positioning Nigeria as Africa’s startup hub.
