SRD Grant Eligibility Explained: Who Qualifies for SASSA’s Social Relief of Distress Grant in 2025

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant, also known as the SASSA R370 grant, is a temporary financial lifeline for unemployed South Africans facing economic hardship. Introduced in May 2020 amid the COVID-19 crisis, it provides R370 per month to eligible individuals who have no other means of support. As of 2025, the grant has been extended until March 2026 with no increase from R370, but eligibility has been tightened to combat fraud through monthly verifications using data from Home Affairs, tax authorities, and banks.

This ensures funds reach those truly in need, with SASSA processing millions of applications while disqualifying ineligible ones.

Below, I’ll break down the key eligibility criteria, application process, exclusions, and tips based on official SASSA guidelines for 2025. All info is current as of November 2025 – always verify on the SASSA website, as rules can change.

Core Eligibility Requirements for the SRD Grant in 2025

To qualify, you must meet all of these criteria. SASSA cross-checks your details monthly, so even approved beneficiaries can be removed if circumstances change.
    Age and Residency:

      • You must be between 18 and 59 years old (as of the application date).
      • South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee/asylum seeker with a valid Section 22 permit or refugee status.
      • Note: Asylum seekers must have a valid visa; undocumented individuals are ineligible.

    Income Threshold:

    • Total household income must be less than R624 per month (increased from R350 in February 2025 to account for inflation).
    • Bank account balance must not exceed R624 at verification time. SASSA checks this via bank data.

    Unemployment Status:

    • No formal employment, self-employment, or regular income sources.
    • Not receiving any other government assistance, such as UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund), NSFAS (student funding), or other grants (e.g., pension, child support).

    No Criminal Record:

      • Must not have a pending criminal case or conviction for fraud/theft-related offenses (verified via Home Affairs).

    Temporary Nature:

    • The grant is not permanent – you may need to reapply after 12 months or if your situation changes. Existing beneficiaries don’t reapply monthly but must pass ongoing checks.

Who is Excluded from SRD Eligibility?

    SASSA excludes individuals who:

    • Receive other social grants or UIF benefits.
    • Have income from any source ≥ R624/month (including informal work).
    • Own a vehicle registered in their name or have a bank balance > R624.
    • Are in prison or have a fraud conviction.
    • Are students receiving NSFAS or other bursaries.

These exclusions are enforced through automated cross-checks with SARS (tax), UIF, and banking systems, reducing fraud by 30% in 2025.

How to Apply or Check Eligibility for the SRD Grant

    Online Application (Recommended):

    • Visit the official SASSA SRD portal: srd.sassa.gov.za.
    • Enter your ID number and phone number.
    • Verify with OTP, then complete the form with income/bank details.
    • Approval takes 5–10 days; you’ll get a reference number to track status.
    Offline Application (Recommended):
      • Visit a SASSA office with ID, proof of residence, and income affidavit. Processing: 3–6 months.

    Check Status:

      • SMS: Send “status [ID number]” to 1347737.
Reapplications aren’t needed monthly for approved users, but if rejected, appeal within 30 days with new proof.

    Important Notes for 2025

    • Payment Amount: Still R370/month (no increase announced for 2025/26, despite calls for R500).

    • Extension: Confirmed until March 2026, with stricter verifications to curb abuse.
